Disaster Relief

9 faith groups responding to Hurricane Melissa—and how you can help

As Hurricane Melissa sweeps through the Caribbean, faith-based relief groups are among the first to respond, providing aid to those in need. From evangelical volunteers to Catholic charities and interfaith coalitions, here’s a look at how they are helping—and how you can support their efforts:

1. Send Relief
The Southern Baptist Convention’s humanitarian arm activated disaster response teams before the storm, distributing tarps, food kits, and clean water across Jamaica and Haiti.

2. World Relief
Focusing on empowering local churches, World Relief coordinates with pastors to identify and assist families in greatest need, leveraging deep community ties for swift action.

3. Catholic Relief Services (CRS)
CRS is on the ground delivering emergency supplies like shelter materials, hygiene kits, and water purification systems, working closely with local dioceses to direct aid.

4. Cross Catholic Outreach
Cross Catholic Outreach has launched a Hurricane Melissa relief fund, providing food, medical supplies, and grants in Jamaica, with plans to support long-term community rebuilding.

5. United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and Anglican Churches
UMCOR partners with Caribbean groups to deliver food and shelter, while Anglican churches open parish halls as evacuation centers, emphasizing ecumenical collaboration.

6. Convoy of Hope
The organization is coordinating with partners and local contacts to send truckloads of essential supplies—including food, clean drinking water, hygiene kits, baby care products and more—to support survivors in the days and weeks ahead.

7. Samaritan’s Purse
Samaritan’s Purse says it is ready to deploy disaster relief teams, supplies, and aircraft to areas hit by Hurricane Melissa. The evangelical charity urged supporters to pray for those in the storm’s path and said it will focus on urgent needs such as shelter, water, food, hygiene, and medical care, with its Emergency Field Hospital on standby.

8. Food For the Poor
A nonprofit (based in Florida) with 40+ years of presence in Jamaica and ready‑on‑the‑ground staff and warehouse support ahead of Melissa.

9. The Salvation Army
Staff in Jamaica’s East Division mobilized early to advise residents on protecting their families and are providing food, shelter, and emotional support.

Faith groups of all backgrounds are working together to bring relief and hope to Hurricane Melissa’s victims. Your support can make a real difference in their ongoing efforts.
