Faith-Based Organizations Provide Aid in Libya

09/29/2023

Weeks after a catastrophic storm burst two dams and flooded the eastern port city of Derna in Libya, survivors wonder if they will ever have a home again. In the aftermath of the devastation that left thousands dead and tens of thousands missing, several faith-based organizations have stepped forward to provide emergency humanitarian aid. These organizations are working around the clock to offer critical support and relief to those affected by the crisis.

Christian Aid and Dan Church Aid (DCA)
Christian Aid has joined hands with Dan Church Aid (DCA), their Act Alliance partner with a well-established presence in Libya since 2011. They are providing vital medical support to rescue teams in Derna where immediate assistance is crucial. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish shelters in Benghazi to accommodate families who have lost their homes, providing them with a haven during these trying times.

Convoy of Hope
Convoy of Hope, a faith-based organization with a deep commitment to feeding the world, has activated its Crisis Relief Fund to respond to the crisis in Libya. Their multifaceted approach includes delivering essential supplies such as food, clean water, hygiene products, shelter, blankets, and generators to those in need.

World Relief
World Relief is swiftly identifying partners in the region to address the immediate needs of the affected population. They are collaborating with local organizations in Libya to provide critical medical services, emergency shelter, food assistance, and more. Their commitment to rapid response underscores the urgency of the situation and the importance of reaching those affected as quickly as possible.

Muslims Around the World Project (MATW)
MATW has taken swift action to alleviate the suffering of affected individuals. They are organizing a donation drive on their website, mobilizing their resources to provide aid on the ground in Libya. Their efforts reflect the global Islamic community’s commitment to supporting those in need during times of crisis.

MAP International
MAP International, a Christian humanitarian organization based in the United States, focuses on delivering medicines and healthcare supplies to people in humanitarian crises around the world. In Libya, their support extends beyond medical aid to include essential supplies such as blankets, clothing, water filters, and more.

Islamic Relief
Working closely with local partners, Islamic Relief has initiated funding distributions of essential aid like food, blankets, and mattresses to families who have lost their homes. Tens of thousands of people in Libya are now displaced, and Islamic Relief is appealing for more international support to assist those affected by these crises.

Caritas Internationalis
Caritas Internationalis (Caritas International) is a global emergency and disaster relief organization actively engaged in providing emergency aid, development aid, and social services worldwide. Their presence in Libya underscores the international community’s commitment to supporting the nation during these difficult times.

Live Dead
In Egypt, Live Dead personnel and partners worked with local Egyptian partners to send truckloads of supplies across the Egyptian/Libyan border and into Derna. The trucks reached a local international church member who then distributed the goods to the suffering in the name and spirit of Jesus. “The non-governmental organization we are working with here has been amazing,” said a field worker “We finished the project and sent 50 large trucks of medical supplies and food.”
